Project highlights

See how science, practice, and certification have worked together to promote better fishing standards! Discover the highlights of the project Carefish/catch in this document

We also released posters summarising key fish-welfare findings: risks from capture through handling, stunning and killing, plus evidence-based ways to reduce suffering. Download them here

The project has come to an end, but the work is just starting. Stay tuned!

Carefish/catch News image

Nov. 28, 2025

As an overview of the Carefish/catch project, we released a series of new posters highlighting the most important findings to date on fish welfare in fisheries. These posters summarise a systematic evaluation of the welfare impacts of five major fishing methods. By identifying the most critical hazards, from capture and air exposure to onboard handling, stunning and killing, the project provides practical, evidence-based recommendations to reduce suffering in fisheries.

The insights gained are already helping to inform improvements in certification standards such as Friend of the Sea®. Together, the posters offer a clear overview of the main welfare risks in different gears and outline feasible measures that can be implemented by fisheries to achieve more ethical and sustainable practices.

Our goals

The welfare of wild-caught fishes has been overlooked in practice, research, advocacy, and policy. The Carefish/catch project aims to promote better fishing standards, by addressing 5 main goals:

  • assess global animal welfare impacts in fisheries
  • identify the potential of reducing animal suffering in various fishing methods and species
  • analyse the economic and social feasibility of the improvements suggested
  • raise problem and solution awareness in general and specific audiences
  • implement welfare guidelines into the Friend of the Sea fisheries certification scheme

Our outreach

To establish welfare standards in fisheries, we devise assessments to identify keypoints of welfare hazards and suggest improvements to reduce suffering of individuals in specific fishing methods.

Our welfare assessment reports in fisheries:

Some Summer Shoal 2023 event participants formulated their thoughts and ideas for better fish welfare. The result is an informal yet substantial collection of suggestions, principles, goals, and insights in twelve essays, the Whitepaper on Fish Welfare , released in August 2024.
